Abstract

The extent to which students master rational numbers is a predictor of future success in mathematics. However, understanding of rational numbers is difficult for children and many fail to perform even in simple tasks. Researchers have admitted that most of the students’ difficulties can be attributed to inadequate instruction. Educational games provide new possibilities for teaching and learning. Data from games can be used to inform teachers about their pupils’ progressions. By presenting such data in an efficient and useful manner, one might improve assessment and the way feedback is given. Also, a proper data tool could provide help for teachers with inadequate teaching resources. This position paper presents a novel teacher reporting tool for a math game and thus seeks a way to increase the value of the serious game. Aims and requirements for future research and further development of the tool are discussed.
