Abstract

In mechanical engineering the lifetime estimation and testing of components are typically carried out by using Miner’s rule, and cumulative damage principle combined with loading determination by rain flow algorithm. The method is traditionally based on statistical loading distribution or some typical loading history which is considered as constant running state. If the limit for cumulative damage of failure is known, it is fairly straightforward to estimate the component lifetime. However, applying this method does not correspond to reality. This is because machines are seldom used only in one constant running state. The life-time estimation should be based on real running states which the machine or component will meet during it whole lifetime.
