Modal Noise Suppression in Multimode Optical Fibers

Modal noise is analyzed in fiber-optic devices which employ coherent radiation sources. Modal noise is regarded as a consequence of random modulation of the phase of a coherent signal in the fiber, and internal interference is responsible for conversion. It is shown that modal noise can be substantially suppressed within a given band.
