Reliability and availability performance as a tool in the optimization power systems

The reason for the existence of AC and DC UPS power systems is the unreliability of public line power, causing unacceptably high risks for the profitability, existence, growth or some other vital aspect of business dependent upon the use of computers, data communications etc. The acceptable level of risk depends upon the value or vitality of the system to the business. The optimal solution for a UPS power system is the one with the smallest overall life-cycle costs. A case study is used to describe how reliability and availability performance can be utilized in order to achieve a solution from the viewpoint of the power system user.
