The previous analysis highlights the complex links between the notions of design, creativity, and innovation. Creativity cannot be considered as separate from design, but rather it must be considered as part of the processes of design and innovation. The form of creativity involved during design refers to the notion of ingenium, a form of rationality that establishes links between things or concepts. Creativity and innovation are also bounded by the nature of design in which a permanent tension exists between needs for abstraction and concretization. This is leading to a situation where both of these aspects need to be considered and combined.
Creativity can be promoted during the design process by searching for weaknesses of previous solutions. Most of the design tasks in industry are
incremental, and the need to focus more on those tasks is also required in research. It can be done, for example, by detecting contradictions or conflicts (Altshuller 1984). By developing structure-based reasoning (Coatanéa et al. 2016) approaches at early design stages, it is possible to explore the design spaces and to detect high-value design directions. Those solutions should
generate high value for the users and in this way increase the potential for innovation, since innovation is only considered as such if it has gone
through the selection of a community of users. Modeling has to penetrate the field of creativity and innovation more strongly in the future. New modeling approaches dedicated to the early stages can provide such type of insight.
