In this context, the role of fracture toughness in increasing the wear resistance is studied in impact-abrasion conditions. Steel with high hardness but poor fracture toughness is compared to the one with very high fracture toughness but relatively low hardness. Wear resistance of the steels was studied using an impact abrasion test. This is a particularly severe test, in which samples are subjected to both impact as well as abrasion. The tested samples were characterised and assessed for the wear mechanisms. The initial assessments have ledto some impressive new knowledge about the mechanism of impact abrasion.
