From traditional occupational safety work to systematic leisure time safety promoting

Employers have no legal obligation to promote leisure time safety at workplaces. However, a previous study in Finland showed that the companies associated with strong safety culture have increasing interest to voluntary promote also leisure time safety at workplaces. The study also showed that the companies’ had no idea or only a remote idea about the occurred leisure time accidents. Therefore, the companies have a need to construct more systematic methods for their promotion of leisure time safety.
In this case study, the researchers constructed a systematic approach to promote safety for leisure time (HEKOTE) and validated the approach in four companies. The constructed approach consisted of four modules: (1) Data gathering and data analysis, (2) Building up promotion activities, (3) Evaluation of the effects of the promotion activities, and (4) Communication. During the case study, the researchers facilitated the companies’ development projects and collected experiences of leisure time safety promoting at workplaces. At the end of the case study the HEKOTE-approach and the related promotion activities were evaluated by interviews and queries.
In two out of the four cases, the implementation of HEKOTE-approach was fully successful. The employers of these companies experienced that promoting had had positive effects on their leisure time safety. As an example, the employees experienced that their knowledge and risk assessment skills of leisure time dangers were improved during the project. At the end of the case study, all the four case companies were still enthusiastic and planned to continue developing their leisure time safety promoting also in the future.
