A transportation system should be developed into an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable system. Public transportation is corner stone of sustainable traffic. Compared to private car, public transportation causes considerable benefits to the society, which are often more substantial than the benefits of the public transport provider or user. Hence the society should contribute to enhancing the usage of public transport.
The greatest potential of increasing public transportation ridership is among those who use a private car for the majority of trips, but occasionally make trips using public transport. In addition, it must be ascertained that the regular users of public transport system do not change their mode choice. The ticket system of public transport can be developed towards serving the needs of different customer groups more effectively. A ticket system consists of tariff principles, ticket types and payment methods.
This study investigates the opportunities and challenges of a post-pay public transport ticket. The benefit of a post-pay ticket is that a customer always possesses a valid ticket. The occasional user of public transport does not need to remember the balance on the travel card. The standard of service experienced by all patrons is improved as the ticket does not have to be charged before or between traveling.
A post-pay public transport ticket enables the manipulation of the tariff structure with varying number of trips. The study looks into a variety of tariff structures which encourage a customer to increase ridership. Moreover, when a ticket is paid for after usage, customers do not need to anticipate their travel needs in order to purchase the most suitable ticket. With deferred payment, a ticket can conform to customers’ travel needs.
