Minimization of losses in latex-nanodiamond films for dielectric energy harvesting

Dielectric elastomer generators (DEGs) are known as a promising class of energy harvesters. However, most of the existing DEG prototypes utilize elastomeric materials that are not designed for such applications. Therefore, the performance and the economic viability of the harvester is affected. Nitrile rubber used as a membrane for DEG usually provides good electromechanical properties, but has comparably high dielectric losses. Therefore, minimization of such losses is required. In the present research, dielectric losses were reduced in the low frequency area by the addition of fillers, namely, different surface-functionalized nanodiamonds (NDs). NDs with hydrogen-functionalized surface showed the best loss reduction. Moreover, two methods of composite preparation and their effect on the reduction of losses were compared.
