In this paper, the number of maximum power points (MPP) in photovoltaic (PV) generators was studied during irradiance transitions caused by moving clouds. The study was based on the characteristics of around 27,000 irradiance transitions identified in measured irradiance data and was conducted using a mathematical model of irradiance transitions and an experimentally verified MATLAB Simulink model of a PV module. The number of MPPs was found to increase strongly with the increasing PV string length. It was also found that dark shadow edges and shadow edges moving parallel to the PV module strings cause the largest MPP numbers. The results indicate that losses through operation in a local MPP instead of the global one during irradiance transition caused by moving clouds have only a minor effect on the total energy production of PV generators.
