Tiivistelmä

To meet the tightening emission regulations for diesel fuelled vehicles, diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC) have gained a crucial role in the diesel after-treatment system. Therefore the long-term stability of a DOC is essential. Under the real engine operation environment, elements like sulphur, phosphorus, calcium, and zinc originating from engine oils and fuels are potential contaminants for DOC [4]. Catalysts having platinum supported on aluminium oxide (Pt/Al2O3) have been commonly used to oxidize HC and CO in the exhaust of light duty diesel vehicles. The disadvantage of the Al2O3 support is its high affinity to sulphur. However, silicon dioxide (SiO2) support has shown better resistance towards sulphur in comparison with Al2O3 support. In addition, the Pt/SiO2-ZrO2 has already found to have high activity towards CO oxidation. The aim of this research is to find out the effect of sulphur poisoning on the activity of Pt supported Al2O3 and SiO2-ZrO2 catalysts.
