Tiivistelmä

During the past few years, gamification has emerged as an ever-growing area of research and new applications. The concept refers to the use of game design elements in non-game context and it has often been applied to improve people’s motivation in otherwise arduous and repeating tasks. Consequently, the ethical questions are prevalent when solutions are gaming with people’s natural playfulness. This study departs from the extant literature that has focused either bright or dark side of gamified solutions, and focuses on the question whether gamification itself is ethically justified at all. The ethical discussion of gamification presented in this study is based on Kantian deontology, utilitarian consequentialism and Aristotelian virtue ethics. This study shows that gamifying work can cause more problems than it solves.
